Chin Implant / Chin Reduction Surgery

   The chin is an important facial feature, particularly so in evaluating one’s profile.

Chin surgery also knows as mentoplasty is a procedure that aims at either reshaping the chin either by enhancement with an implant or it's a reduction surgery on the bone.
It is not uncommon for a plastic surgeon to recommend chin surgery to a patient having nose surgery in order to achieve facial proportion since the size of the chin may make the perceived size of the nose bigger or smaller. In most cases chin surgery gives the face more balance.

A chin that is defined helps give balance to the face and influences how a person's profile looks. Usually, people when they look in the mirror, focus on the size and shape of their noses, their earsor fine wrinkling of the skin. Not a lot of them pay attention to their chins with the same sort of focus. But having a weak chin or a double chin is not an asset.

Surgeons who specialize in rhinoplasty (surgery of the nose), are often the first to suggest that changes in chin size or shape may enhance a profile as much as rhinoplasty. It is common for the facial plastic surgeon to recommend chin surgery in addition to nose surgery when the surgeon sees that chin augmentation is necessary to achieve facial balance and harmony. Fortunately, this is a relatively straightforward procedure that can make a major difference.

A nice balanced profile can be usually achieved by inserting an implant in the chin. Another procedure involves moving the bone forward to build up a receding chin. Also the chin reduction of a jutting or too prominent chin is possible in chin surgery. This is usually done by submental liposuction where excess fatty tissue is removed to redefine the chin or neckline of the patient. Sometimes if there's a contributing problem of birth defects in the structure of the jaw itself, chin surgery of the jaw will improve how the face looks and functions.

HOW WILL THE PROCEDURE BE PERFORMED?
The implants used to improve the chin are shaped to the required contour and are inserted through a small incision usually inside the lower lip, to create the pocket and then the implant is inserted inside the mouth, along the lower lip, directly over the jawbone or in the skin just under the chin area. In this case, the procedure leaves very little, if any, scarring.

The incision can also be located under the chin in the crease, it is very inconspicuous and is about one inch long.

The implants are made in a variety shapes and sizes.

ANESTHESIA
Local anesthesia and complementary sedation or general anaesthesia.

SURGERY LENGTH
Between 30 minutes to 1 hour

RECOVERY
From 2 to 4 days.
You will have to be on a soft diet for a few days.

PAIN
Not too much. Your surgeon will advice you to take some analgesics.

REMOVAL OF THE STITCHES
Incisions inside the mouth (intra-oral incision) are closed with sutures (stitches) that dissolve. Removable sutures are used for incisions under the chin and are taken out after five to seven days.

BRUISES AND SWELLING
The bruises are very infrequent.
The swelling may last two weeks approximately

SCARS
The scars will be completely invisibles.

RESULTS
The definite results will be fully appreciated after two months
