Despite the added cost of air travel and overseas accommodation, record numbers are choosing to undertake treatment outside the US, with a growing number opting for Asia and South America.

An estimated 250,000 Americans received plastic surgery and dental treatments abroad last year. The majority visited mainland South America, with Argentine, Bolivia and Brazil the most popular destinations.

[...] An oral examination and consultation, which can cost up to 80$ in US, is free in Bolivia. The average price of a single tooth extraction at a private clinic in the US is 140$. The same operation costs about 70$ in Argentine and Brazil and as little as 50$ in Bolivia.

The average price of root canal treatment on two canals at a private clinic in the US is 300$. The operation can be done for 130$ in Argentine , and 110 in Bolivia.

On expensive treatments such as dental implants, the savings are even greater. The Branemark system of dental implants – the most expensive implant system – costs an average of 4000$ in the US. It costs 1000$ in Bolivia! [...]
